The annual ANZAC Day flag raising at the Colac, Warncoort, Whoorel and Beeac Cemeteries will proceed this year, with Geelong Cemeteries Trust staff raising the flags. The Trust would like to acknowledge that unfortunately due to the current COVID-19 restrictions we cannot have the local schools assist with putting the flags out.
Over 1000 Australian flags will be placed at the known graves of Australian service men and women in the Colac Otway region to commemorate ANZAC Day. It is a unique way to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of those who have served our country.
The flag-raising tradition began in 2014 as an initiative of the Geelong Cemeteries Trust. The 2020 initiative was cancelled due to the pandemic, making its return in 2021 all the more poignant.
If you are in the region, why not stop by, pay your respects and experience this event that captures local, national and international attention.
The flags will be on display in cemeteries from 21 April 2021.
Chief Executive Darryl Thomas OAM says, “We are glad to be able to recommence the flag raising tradition this year. The community aspect was greatly missed last year due to COVID restrictions – so we appreciate the opportunity to be able to come together and remember those men and women who have served our country. The flag raising is a big task and we thank our staff for making this possible.”
