Flags to fly to remember ANZAC Day heroes

Flags to fly to remember ANZAC Day heroes

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

This ANZAC Day, Geelong Cemeteries Trust is proud to once again reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of those who have served our country. Now in its ninth year, our ANZAC flag raising tradition continues at the Colac, Warncoort, Whoorel and Beeac Cemeteries.

Over 1000 Australian flags will be placed at these cemeteries at known graves of Australian service people.

An initiative of the Geelong Cemeteries Trust since 2015, the flag commemoration has become an important aspect of ANZAC Day for each of the regional communities involved. This year, the  flags will be raised on Friday, 22 April 2022, and subsequently on display until Thursday, 28 April 2022.

The public is welcome to visit the cemeteries to view the spectacular display of Australian flags. If you are in the region, stop in to pay your respects and experience this sight.

Other ANZAC memorials can also be found at the Gisborne Cemetery and at the Geelong Eastern Cemetery, in front of the administration building.

On ANZAC Day in 2019, poppies were added to the base of the statue at the Eastern Cemetery, as an enduring symbol of remembrance.
